Why are we here?

In the early 1990s, after completing my studies in politics and sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid and having forged an everlasting friendship with Myriam, who is now the driving force, creator, and protagonist of this great project that is Commun, I returned to Gran Canaria with the idea of embarking on an independent journey, a spirit that has accompanied me throughout my life.
From the very beginning, I was captivated by the social situation of women in the southeastern region of the island, generating in me a strong need to diagnose the situation of women in this area and conducting my first sociological studies.
During this time, women’s councils began to proliferate, European initiatives specifically targeting female entrepreneurship emerged, the first plans for equal opportunities between women and men were launched, etc. With this fertile ground, I began my professional career in local public institutions, where my first challenge was the creation of a specific women’s documentation center, which would be part of a nationwide network of centers and libraries. Years later, I took on the coordination of the women’s department, and subsequently, the general direction of social services for the same municipality.
However, my work-related concerns mirror my personal concerns, so working in the public administration ceased to be a challenge for me, and I continued as a freelancer pursuing the two paths that fulfill me. On the one hand, collaborating with organizations by providing training on equal opportunities and treatment between women and men, and on the other hand, developing my role as a social researcher in the field of the social reality of the Canary Islands, as well as embarking on the path of experimentation in qualitative methodologies in digital environments.
